What Is a 10/3 Wire Amp Rating? 

The 10/3 wire amp rating tells you two things at once. The “10” is the American Wire Gauge (AWG) size, and the “3” is the number of insulated current-carrying conductors inside the cable jacket. A standard 10/3 wire contains three conductors: black (hot), white (neutral), and red (hot), plus a bare copper ground wire that does not count toward the conductor number.
